Love, sex and dhoka in Kashmir

Love, sex and dhoka in Kashmir
New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) With Zakir Musa’s killing, security forces have recorded an extremely important kill in the battle against Islamic fundamentalism in the Valley, in the main south Kashmir where the jungles are now being used to train local youth. Musa, a byproduct of generation X, is a neophyte who grew up in turbulence and turmoil and experienced the so-called ‘azadi’ struggle first-hand, but chose the path of ‘sharia’ instead, brainwashed as he was by Wahabi Salafism indoctrination.

Zakir Rashid Bhat, 25, was trapped by security forces in a three-storey house in southern Kashmir late on Thursday and to flush him out, the house was set ablaze during the operation. Bhat or Musa, a former commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest of the militant groups fighting against Indian rule in Kashmir, founded his own group and declared its association with al Qaeda in 2017.

Caught between two lovers, one of whom snitched to the intel network which moved with alacrity to pin Musa down and kill him. Apparently poster boy Burhan Wani and Samir Tiger too died because their ex-lovers squealed to police snitches and gave them the exact location of the prey. This is a major downside and new IG Kashmir S.P. Pani is meticulously using his intel network to nail these terrorists one by one.

The most dangerous element is that stone pelters are seamlessly migrating to weaponised militancy. The age group of 12-20 is most
vulnerable to this phenomenon. The next big thing after Musa’s extermination is Riyaz Naikoo.

Riyaz Naikoo, 33, carries a reward of Rs 12 lakh on his head. He now replaces Zakir Musa as the most wanted militant commander in the Valley after Musa’s death. Although he is not affiliated to the Al Qaeda as Musa was, Naikoo is the most senior commander of the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen or HM, to which Musa too belonged until he got fed up of the group and dumped it.

Categorised as “A++” level militant, intelligence agencies believe Naikoo is more of a “liberal militant commander” as compared to Musa who settled for nothing except the struggle to establish an Islamic state in Kashmir. Kidnappings of families of policemen attributed to Naikoo forced the police brass during 2016-17 to tell policemen not to visit their families in south Kashmir areas without security and permission from seniors.

This threat become more real by circulation of Naikoo’s threatening video clips on social media. Naikoo’s appearances at funerals of slain militants where he would offer gun salutes became a major problem for the security forces. He also used these funerals as a delta for recruitment.

But the local terror network has its hands full with 41-year-old IG Kashmir S.P. Pani who is chasing the quarry relentlessly notching up kill after kill. Odisha IPS officer Swayam Prakash Pani was appointed the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Kashmir range, making him the youngest officer to hold the post last February. A 2000 batch IPS officer of Jammu Kashmir cadre, Pani (41) was serving as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, South Kashmir Range.

Pani, a ruthless hunter who relies on intel to manage anti-terrorist operations, served as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, South Kashmir Range. During his tenure as DIG, south Kashmir, many militant commanders were killed in encounters. While focusing on anti-militancy operations, Pani also relentlessly worked to bring misguided youths to the mainstream and succeeded in bringing seven youths back to normal life. Pani also ensured securing arrests of militants from encounter sites.

As many as four militants were arrested from encounter sites during his tenure as DIG.

There are now two generations in Kashmir Valley which have openly espoused the cause of ‘azadi,’ for the construct of this war against India is now 40 years old. Kashmiris have over these 40 years forgotten they are welded to the sovereign through the instrument of
accession. Kashmiri nationalism has given way to Islamic radicalisation and even the Hurriyat hawks are on the margins.

Even since 2010 despite sporadic attempts to raise Cain in the Valley, Kashmiris had more or less got used to peace realising that ‘Hindustan Chodega nahin’ or Pakistan was no longer an option.

The tipping point came in January 2013 when Afzal Guru was hanged and while the Omar Abdullah administration ring-fenced the Valley from expected trouble, this underling credo of faux peace was shattered and even exacerbated by the extreme Right of India BJP going into a coalition with the extreme Right of Kashmir soft separatist PDP.

Almost immediately Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s heir apparent the dreaded ideologue Masrat Alam was freed and all hell broke loose. The Ahl-e-Hadith is arguably the closest to the Wahabism, the deadliest strain. With the unidirectional rise of Jamiat Ahl-e- Hadees or Hadith, J&K became one of the talking points among the deep state in Delhi.

As many as 1,000 mosques sprouted out of nowhere in south Kashmir and as many as 2000 all over Kashmir. Cultural Islam was being systematically replaced by religious Islam funneled by Saudi money and a process of Arabisation had begun in right earnest. In parallel, madrasas opened up with clerics from UP and Bihar selling the idea of religious Islam.

Remember that radicalisation ends at religion and a combination of personal and social reasons, perceived sense of grievance, hurt and anger began to chip away at the sufi fabric of Kashmiriyat.

This lead to a persecution complex that they were wronged due to their identity resulting in an aspirational deficit. This flawed mind percept with a strong bent towards theological Islam. They are now aligning their local Islamic aspiration with global Islamic aspirations and ambition.

The re-emergence of local subscription is what is most worrying for the Indian security apparatus. ISI C Wing too has realised that the jihad complex which it has nurtured inside Pakistan to use to foment terror in the Valley may well see a change in strategy for local youth have fallen prey to Islamic ideology which goes beyond the call for azadi.

The establishment of ‘sharia’ appears to be the next step.

Fire officers suspended for Surat blaze, state govt orders all coaching centres shut

Fire officers suspended for Surat blaze, state govt orders all coaching centres shut
Surat, May 26 (IANS) The Surat Municipal Corporation on Saturday suspended two fire officers for granting a no-objection certificate to the building which was engulfed by a devastating fire here that claimed 22 young lives, hours after the manager of the coaching class where the deceased students were studying was arrested and two others booked for the incident.

Municipal Commissioner M Thenarasan told reporters that Surat’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer S.K. Acharya and Fire Officer Kirti Modh were suspended with immediate effect on charges of not taking action against the Takshashila Arcade where Friday’s blaze occurred for violation of fire safety norms.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani stated: “We have constituted an investigation committee, Urban Secretary (Principal Secretary, Urban Development), Mukesh Puri has been asked to file a report based on which we will take action. The manager and builder have been arrested.”

Surat Assistant Commissioner of Police P.L. Chaudhari late Saturday evening said the death toll in the incident had risen to 22. He informed reporters that “two teenage girls died today, taking the toll to 22, including 18 girls and four boys.”

Earlier, an official had said the number was 23. Around 12 injured persons were still undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

Most of the students who were killed in the fire were aged between 14 and 17. Some were expecting their Class 12 results on Saturday.

Shaken by the fire, all of Gujarat’s eight municipal corporations and scores of municipalities on Saturday ordered a shutdown of all coaching centres running in commercial complexes.

Officials said the coaching centres had been ordered to put all fire safety norms in place, without which they would not be allowed to function.

The authorities started investigating fire safety norms in coaching classes, private hospitals and other buildings in various towns and cities of the state. Many of these buildings, including a library in capital Gandhinagar, were sealed, along with 40 coaching centres in Bharuch and many others at several places.

The police have arrested Bhargav Butani, who ran the art and drawing classes in Takshashila Arcade building in Surat’s Sarthana area, Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said.

Two others, including the builder of the commercial complex, Harsukh Vekaria, were also booked. A search was on for the builder.

Sharma told reporters: “We have ordered an investigation into the fire incident by the ACP, Crime Branch. A case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code for culpable homicide has been lodged against the accused.”

Official sources revealed there were no proper fire safety norms being followed in the building. Two shops and around a dozen two-wheelers parked below were also gutted in another fire sparked off by the blaze because of the electric wires and poles nearby.

The fire broke out late afternoon around 4 p.m. in the Smart Design Studio, which ran illegally on the covered terrace of the Takshashila building that effectively became a fourth storey.

Officials said the fire started at the ground floor and reached the top floor. Some students of another class, rushed to the terrace to escape the fire and found themselves stuck there. The only way to the top floor was a three-foot wooden staircase, which had been reduced to ashes.

According to witnesses, there must have been around 50 students in the Takshashila Arcade building when it caught fire. Graphic videos on social media showed more than 10 panic-stricken students from the third and fourth storey jumping off to escape the blaze and the billowing smoke.

Tragically, hundreds of people watched and many shot videos and pictures while student after student fell off the building like ninepins. Half of the dozen students who jumped in panic were killed.

Eyewitnesses alleged the fire brigade staff, which got delayed by half an hour, did not have any nets to hold the students jumping from the building and even their hydraulic staircase could not go beyond a little over the second floor of the building.

The cause of the deadly inferno is not yet clear, though officials believe it was sparked off by a short circuit in a sweet shop in the building.

Congress may opt for MP from South as leader in LS

Congress may opt for MP from South as leader in LS
New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) Increasing its numbers in the Lok Sabha by only eight since 2014, the Congress has now to decide its leader in the lower house and it remains to be seen if party chief Rahul Gandhi takes the role or some other leader is chosen.

The Congress again does not have numbers to get the status of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as was the case in 2014. It had then chosen Mallikarjun Kharge as its leader in the House though there were suggestions then that Gandhi – who was not the party chief then – should take the post.

However, with Gandhi insisting on quitting as party chief at the Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday, despite the party’s highest decision-making body rejecting his resignation, it is unclear if he will accept this post.

Also the role of the legislature party leader entails regular presence in the House and it remains be seen if Gandhi can manage, given his campaign commitments.

The party will not have some of its articulate leaders from the outgoing Lok Sabha including Kamal Nath, who is now Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, K.C. Venugopal, who is now General Secretary (Organisation) besides Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushmita Dev and Deepender Hooda, who lost the election.

If Gandhi again decides not to take the post, the party will have to choose a leader with sufficient seniority who is able to strongly articulate issues.

With the party having won the maximum seats – 15 – in Kerala followed by eight in Tamil Nadu, there is strong possibility that someone from the south – which accounts for half of the Congress’ number in the Lok Sabha – could be chosen, given the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad hails from Jammu and Kashmir.

The names doing the rounds from Kerala include former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, party MP Suresh Kodikunnil, who will be into his seventh Lok Sabha term and K Muraleedharan, the son of former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran and now in his fourth term as MP.

Modi asks parliamentarians to shun VIP culture

Modi asks parliamentarians to shun VIP culture
New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) Directing the newly-elected parliamentarians not to fall in the trap of publicity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday cautioned them while talking to the media and asked them to shun the “VIP culture”.

“The country hates VIP culture. Why shouldn’t we stand in line for an airport security check? There is nothing wrong in it,” Modi said.

He asked the MPs to restrain from asking questions like ‘why am I being checked despite being a parliamentarian.’

“You should change yourselves by keeping the public in mind. You are a citizen of the country after all,” he said, asking the MPs to stay away from VIP treatment as much as possible.

He also warned them not to fall in the trap of news media and social media, which were very active and could create trouble for them.

“Why can’t we stand in the queue when we are also citizens,” Modi said, citing the example of former Defence Minister late Manohar Parrikar who had shunned the “VIP culture.”

Removing red lights from government vehicles didn’t yield any economic benefits, but it had sent a good message among the public, the Prime Minister said.

He also told the newly-elected MPs of NDA to check facts before commenting on anything.

Modi asked the NDA MPs not to trust media reports on speculation over joining his Council of Ministers as they were aimed at creating confusion.

The Prime Minister said he was yet to go through the details of all the parliamentarians and that responsibilities will be given to them as per the norms.

Modi also told the newly-elected MPs that they should not just think about the development of their constituencies, but for the whole country.

He also hailed the women power in the Lok Sabha and said that this was the first time in Independent India that such a large number of women MPs would sit in the Parliament. “This has been made possible due to women empowerment,” he said.

Will attend Iftar 100 times: Mamata to appeasement allegations

Will attend Iftar 100 times: Mamata to appeasement allegations
Kolkata, May 25 (IANS) Showing scant regard for the BJP’s constant criticism that she was appeasing Muslims, Mamata Banerjee on Saturday indicated that she would continue to attend ‘Iftaars’ as the community votes for her Trinamool Congress.

Banerjee, who was addressing the media, made the potentially controversial comment while inviting the media to attend an Iftaar party organised by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation towards the end of the month.

“I am going to the Iftar party. You all also please come.

“I appease Muslims, no? I will go there a hundred times. ‘Je goru dudh dei tar lathio khete hoi; (if a cow gives milk, one has to be prepared for its kicks also),” she said.

The Muslim community voted for Banerjee’s Trinamool in the recent elections, where a lot of Hindu votes shifted to the BJP which came up with best performance in Bengal taking 18 seats. The Trinamool, which had got 34 seats five years back, saw its tally getting reduced to 22.
